As part of the bigger investigation undertaken by XXI Udine Conference around the subject of Media Archeology as a pioneering media approach which reconsiders each medium’s identity as part of a network of media discourses, we would like to ask graduates and postgraduates to share their perspective on the relationship between history and digital media culture regarding the concepts of “document,” “archive,” “cartography”. In the media-archaeological perspective materiality is considered as opening to a “hardware” history of media in which technologies, devices, tools and physical structures represent theoretical premises for a new genealogy of historicity. How can these concepts be read as devices and technologies of inscription within the realm of digital culture and new media? How can we relate (or set against) a narrative, canonical historiographical writing (or a post-modern historiography) with anti-narrative, hardware oriented historical approaches? Furthermore, how can new media art be considered as an “alternative” history writing? What are the tools that can be investigated as tools of historical inscriptions and fields of identity negotiation with the media within the new media landscape?

Doctoral candidates and early-career researchers are invited to submit proposals for contributions addressing these and related topics, including, but not limited to:

• Materiality and History: How are digital media changing our perception of History?
• Temporality: What new forms of archeological work do digital media require?
• History writing: What new narratives can be observed especially in relation to the internet?
• Experience: How does our access and thus the production of media change?

The conference language is English.

Participants will need to cover their own travel and accommodation expenses. Travel information as well as a list of affordable hotels and other accommodation will be provided.

Conference attendance is free, but valid NECS-membership is required to participate. Participants must register with NECS at www.necs.org and pay their fee by June 1st.
